In addition to mouth-watering BBQ ribs, char-broiled steaks and home cooked food, The Rockwood Street Grill is proud to be one of the most historic Rockwood restaurants. We are located in a building believed to have been constructed in the late 1800s or early 1900s. It was deeded to W. M. Bristow in 1919, and then to two brothers, Frank and Claude, in 1945. The Bristow’s had a grocery store in the building for many years. In later years two young attorneys, Polk Cooley and Lloyd McCluen, started their law practice on the second floor. The town also had a beauty shop on the second floor as well.
Mr. McCluen and Mr. Cooley purchased the building in 1962 and removed the second floor. When Mr. McCluen became a judge, Mr. Cooley built an office complex in a different location and rented this building to a clothing store for several years. He then leased the building to the Wilson’s, who had a pharmacy for about 25 years.
In early 1998 Dan and Lynda Moore purchased the building and established an antique/collectible store named Something Olde–N-Something New and The Magnolia Tea Room, which served high tea and all homemade foods. When Mr. Moore was remodeling the building he removed some paneling from a wall and discovered a beautiful brick wall that had the remainder of an original Coke sign painted onto the brick. He let this wall remain visible for people to enjoy.
In early 2000 the Moore’s leased the building to Ivan Thompson, who wanted to give Rockwood a full service restaurant. In 2009 Mr. Thompson’s restaurant closed and the town and employees met with Dan and Lynda Moore to encourage them to open another restaurant. The name the Moore’s decided to use was The Rockwood Street Grill because it just fit. The restaurant is in the friendliest, most quaint and unique town named Rockwood and is on Rockwood Avenue in the downtown district, so what other name could be better?
Today the Rockwood Street Grill, Inc., a favorite among Rockwood restaurants, welcomes diners every day with delicious BBQ ribs, char-broiled steak, catfish and hushpuppies, home made desserts and other comfort foods.
